A crew cut will usually suit even quite frizzy hair:

This answer explains the short styles. The first two links contained therein are quite informative:

[A crew cut is a timeless prep haircut, the photo directly above is from 1946, and yet if the photo was in color, both the guy and the clothes he is wearing could be in the latest J Crew catalog. ]
very short crew cut:

[Around 5/8'; at the front hairline, graduated to about 1/4'; at the back of the crown. Back and sides are tapered from around #0A length down to #000 length at the ears and nape.]
This Marine Lieutenant's hn't crew cut illustrates the graduation in length of the top hair to form the short pomp at the front hairline of a crew cut, flat top crew cut or ivy league; however I guess I should add just so there is no confusion, most short pomp cuts are obviously not graduated to a zero length at the back of the crown as is the Lieutenant's:
http://img188.imageshack.us/img188/8937/
The hair at the center of his front hairline is about one inch in length.(To determine lengths in a photo measure the hair and proportionally compare it to an assumed avg length of the face, compared to the length of the face in th photo. I assumed an average face length from the center of the hairline to the tip of the chin of 8';.)
Any crew cut, except maybe a short flat top crew cut with a practically skinned landing strip, can be converted to a butch haircut as desired, even before getting up out of the barber's chair.
Grooming a crew cut, ivy league, or flat top crew cut is basically the same.
1) Towel dry hair.
2) Barely dip fingertips in jar of wax.
3) Transfer wax on to palms.
4) Smooth palms over hair.
5) Brush hair up off forehead to form short pomp front.
If you decide to try a crew cut, be sure to take a photo to help describe the desired style to the barber or stylist. I suggest not relying on haircut terms alone, because they can be widely interpreted depending on the region and barber/stylist.
